Inside your appointment

What happens during your ultrasound scan?

A calm, private and clinically focused appointment—from the first conversation to the explanation of your findings.

Clear at every stage

A personal diagnostic experience

Before scanning, your clinician reviews the reason for the appointment, relevant symptoms and previous results. The examination is explained clearly, and you can ask questions before giving consent.

01

Private clinical discussion

Confirm the area of concern, medical context and what the ultrasound can—and cannot—assess.

02

Real-time ultrasound imaging

A specialist uses a handheld probe and water-based gel to examine the relevant organs, tissues or blood flow.

03

Findings explained clearly

Where appropriate, the main observations are discussed immediately in language you can understand.

04

Secure report and next steps

Your digital report can be shared with your GP or specialist, with follow-up guidance where required.

Common questions

Private ultrasound FAQs

Direct answers to the questions patients most often ask before booking.

Do I need a GP referral for a private ultrasound?
No. You can self-refer for most PrivateSono ultrasound scans. If your symptoms may need a different test or urgent medical attention, our team will advise you to contact the appropriate healthcare service.
How quickly can I get an ultrasound appointment?
Same-day and next-day appointments are often available, subject to the scan type, specialist and clinic selected. Online booking is available at any time, and the patient team can help with urgent availability.
When will I receive my results?
Your clinician will normally discuss the key findings after the examination. A secure written report is then provided, commonly on the same day or within 24 hours depending on the service and whether specialist review is required.
How much does a private ultrasound cost?
Prices vary by examination. Popular scans include abdominal and pelvic ultrasound at £219, vascular Doppler scans from £249, echocardiography from £279, and full-body ultrasound packages from £600. Check the individual service page for the current price and inclusions before booking.
Is an ultrasound scan safe?
Diagnostic ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves and does not use ionising radiation. It has an established safety record when used appropriately by qualified healthcare professionals.
What can ultrasound detect?
Ultrasound can assess many abdominal and pelvic organs, the thyroid, breast tissue, testes, muscles, tendons, joints, pregnancy, heart structures and blood flow. Its capabilities depend on the body area and clinical question, and it cannot exclude every condition.
How should I prepare for my scan?
Preparation depends on the examination. Some abdominal scans require fasting, while pelvic or urinary scans may require a full bladder. Follow the instructions on your confirmation email and service page; contact the clinic if you are unsure.
Can I share the report with my NHS GP or specialist?
Yes. Your digital report can be shared with your NHS GP, private consultant, insurer or another healthcare professional. Private care does not remove your right to use NHS services.
